Call it the fastest, smoothest or finest android device you’ve seen, LG Optimus 2X/P990 might not be the perfect device in the industry as shown in our unbiased hands-on review. The phone evidently houses impressive hardware such as a snappier dual-core processor and top-class display panel though misses out on build body big-time. LG Optimus 2X/P990 poses both amazing capabilities as well as significant flaws in its design that failed to impress us, the chrome trimmed tad feels 80s’ and the user interface looks ugly just like the rest of LG’s devices; in fact, some widgets are flaky and you’ll be disappointed once you see UI from mid-range phones like
Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advanceand
Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini. Aside from its unimpressive design involving chrome racing stripe that failed to fancy our reviewers and the user interface we felt could be slicker, the Optimus 2X/P990 processor is stunningly fast to compensate for such disappointments.
The phone’s processor rates impressively on our benchmarks, enough to beat its single-core peers and to show off it’s incredibly whiizy menus. On top of that, the processor makes LG Optimus 2X/P990’s interface look smooth big-time and changing from portrait to landscape is bread and butter. Using multi-touch functionality such as pinch to zoom is a nice experience and swapping through long menus especially on web pages feels like running your fingers through a bowl of custard. The front panel is dominated by a 4inch display screen except for the LG logo, earpiece, 1.3Megapixel secondary camera, proximity and accelerometer sensors at its top while the back, home, menu and search touch-sensitive buttons sits at the screen’s bottom. There’s an 8.0Megapixel camera and Led flash at LG Optimus 2X/P990’s back, so you can capture those memorable moments even in darker places though you’ll still get decent photos without using Led flash in brighter or partially dark places.
At 400×800 screen resolution, LG Optimus 2X/P990 might not have the best screen resolution we’ve come across, still text and images appear sharp and crisp so it won’t be an issue when viewing small text. You’ll however do a little scrolling here and there to view web pages in entirety. The phone runs on Android v2.2 Froyo OS (upgradeable to v2.3 Gingerbread). At 512MB RAM, LG Optimus 2X/P990 is below par compared to most devices we’ve seen in this category; however, 8GB internal storage rates average on our benchmarks. The phone lacks 4G radio though 3G is standard considering everything.
