Safaricom unveils free data campaign to woo customers, here is how to get it

Safaricom subscribers are set to enjoy free daily bundles in a new campaign unveiled by the telco. The campaign will customize data plans depending on their usage profiles and is expected to last for the next three months. Data consumption in the country has grown almost three-fold following the covid-19 effects that have forced some companies to have employees work from home and education institutions opt for online classes instead of on-campus learning.

There is also a cutthroat competition in mobile data market segment with the likes of Telkom Kenya going all the way to provide some of the most affordable data plans on every Friday. Recent earnings from the mobile service provider indicate diminishing revenues in traditional services like voice and text messages, while sectors like data and mobile money continue to grow following a steady demand from consumers in the country.

How to get free data bundles on Safaricom

  • On your Safaricom phone, dial *544#
  • Then select free data amongst the options.
  • You should receive a message advising you to wait while the telco processes your free data for that day.

According to the company, the move is aimed at enabling more customers to move their offline activities online as part of the country’s digital transformation agenda. As per statics recorded by the country’s regulator – the Communications Authority, there’s only 25 million mobile broadband connections in the country, leaving almost 60 percent of mobile phone users without access to the internet.

Speaking on the development, Safaricom’s CEO Peter Ndegwa noted that smartphones and the internet had become vital in people’s day to day lives by availing more opportunities to them. According to the CEO, the free data campaign that’s expected to last for the next 90 days will enable all customers to access the internet at no cost.
