Huawei Y5p available at Safaricom shops with a Jisort na Bonga offer (Ksh.8,999 + 4,000 points)

Huawei’s budget focused Y5p is now available at Safaricom shops with a “Jisort na Bonga” offer where customers have the option of buying at discounted rates by topping up with their bonga points. The handset was announced several weeks ago and offers what some would say a “bang’ for your buck” kind of thing. In the offer, customers can buy at Ksh. 8,999 and top up with 4,000 bonga points instead of the full amount – Ksh.10,199.

Safaricom has been on a mission lately to reduce the amounts of Bonga Points within customer’s accounts by offering several alternatives for redeeming them, such as paying for airline tickets with Jambojet as well as purchasing electricity tokens. From the latest developments, seems like subscribers will also have a chance for getting the Huawei Y5p at discounted rates when they top up with Bonga Points.

The Y5p has some interesting specs rallied at the budget tier market such as a 5.45-ich panel the company is calling FullView. Under the hood, users will be getting 32GB worth of internal storage on the device and a modest 3020mAh battery capacity. There’s also 2GB RAM that should be enough for modest applications such as checking mails, browsing the internet and some light duty games.

At that price-point, we didn’t expect a lot from the device and most misgivings are forgiven, but one area I really have to mention is the display resolution. I’m a big fan of a quality panel and the Huawei Y5p seems to offer something just a tad-better than what we’d have expected. The panel maxes-out at 1440x720p which is slightly above the standard HD, and Huawei has correctly tagged it as HD+. With its under 6-ich portfolio, the overall pixel distribution is denser and text should look crisp while images look more vibrant.

The squarish rear camera setup alludes to that same feeling you get when you look at premium models that often have more than one camera, but the Huawei Y5p houses a single sensor at the back which should do fine on most occasions. After all, the likes of Pixels already convinced us we really don’t need that many sensors, what matters is the software bit doing all it can to make photos pop.

The handset is available in three colors; Midnight Black, Phantom Blue and Mint Green. The latter two are created in a special triple-coat paint process that gives the smartphone a unique sheen. Selfie lovers will have to be contended with a 5MP snapper; it can also be intuitively used to unlock the face using face recognition.

Under the hood, the phone comes with Huawei’s EMUI 10.1 which is based on android 10 and as it has become a normality, there’s an AppGallery pre-installed.
